Batteries are used in a variety of products from watches, cellphones, power tools to kid toys and more. When they get damaged, dented or overheated, they can cause fires. Never put batteries in your trash or recycling containers.

Safe storage: Put batteries upright in a non-metal container in a cool, dry area.  

Safe disposal: Drop off batteries (on the accepted list below) for free at the Columbia County Transfer Station during regular business hours or to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.

Accepted items:

• All cellphones

• Alkaline

• Lithium-primary

• Coin or button cell

• Nickel-metal hydride

• Nickel cadmium

• NOTE: Non-vehicle (i.e. lawn mower, kid toys) and vehicle lead-acid batteries are accepted for $2.70/each.

Unaccepted items:

• Batteries that cannot be removed from products (except cellphones)

• Electric vehicle batteries

• Battery storage systems
